In the later part of 2003, Shaun and I decided that we needed an alternative to the unavailable INcon bb37 and similar to the HKS 3037s. The Incon was internally wastegated. The HKS is externally wastegated.
We wanted to offer our customers internally wastegated turbos that would make 400HP and about 500HP which was virtually unknown back then.
After talking with Honeywell (Garrett), they said that the specs of what we wanted could be done, but that we would have to find a supplier/manufacturer that could machine both the intake and exhaust housings to fit the cartridge.
At that point, we came up with the JGYBB37 that utilized a -32 cartridge consisting of 56trim compressor wheel and a JGYBB37R that utilized a '15 cartridge consisting of a 56trim compressor wheel. The JGYBB37 was rated at 44pounds a minute and the JGYBB37R at 55pounds per minute.
Unfortunately, (which seem to hurt/hit our European customers the most) it took of 3 trials of different places to find our last one which was Precision Turbo. I would like to thank Jim of PTE for helping back then.
Our sales were steady and growing and many people enjoyed those turbos. I still remember the rumor mill and the haters on the internet from such places Secret Service in Florida who had some guy called "Enthalpy", Asad or something from FreshAlloy, and wannabe's on the SR20forum, including some of the magazine guys such as M.K. saying how the turbos were badly designed and would not produce anything near what we were claiming.
(I like this part) The turbos were such a hit and did so well, that in December of 2004, Precision contacted us with good news and bad news. The good news was that our cost was going to decrease on the turbos because Garrett decided to ad these turbos to their production line and call them the GT2871r and the GT3076r. The bad news is that we probably would not sell our JGY branded turbos anymore :-).
I still have the original spec sheet on my office wall.
I would like to throw a thank out to Shaun Stewart, a former employee for his contribution to the turbo market.
One of the many points to this is that it just goes to show.......just because you have heard a guys name before, or he is with this group, or he is published here or there, or has 13000 posts on a forum........doesn't mean that he is the definitive source. Proof is much easier to do by showing or doing.....not by saying or describing or claiming
