Drag racing as we currently know is have changed ladies.
Here's the time line:
NHRA started it's import racing series in the late nineties to help our sport.
NDRA (NOPI) competed against NHRA in the middle 2000's.
2008, NHRA and NDRA joined (NHRA gave in) and ran one series under the NDRA.
July 2008, NOPI said "nah, it's cancelled".
Needless to say, many of the big time competitors are not happy, nor some of the big sponsors. Heck, we were even caught off guard as our events schedule was (needless to say) changed.
........here's a link http://www.nopi.com/nopims/dsp_news.php?vaid=1465
So, what is next? My guess is 2........either NHRA re-enters the market........has I always felt their touch and professionalism was there,
or, another entity decides to enter this market and make some money.
Notes:
1. Don't listen to the hype about the US economy. Car enthusiasts will always be, and the aftermarket will stay strong. Also, the car manufacturers figured out in the middle 2000's that there is money in modifying.........take a look at GM with their Saturn line, Toyota with the Scion line and entrance into the NASCAR lifestyle, and Nissan with their push of the Nismo line.
2. I am surprised that 2 brothers (NOPI) were able to out-due the big guys. I am amazed that Toyota and GM just let NOPI run the drag scene with total control..........look what happened...........and I wouldn't put it passed one of the big car manufacturers to secretly bankroll a new racing scene.
3. Drifting will not increase even though dragging is going to go through a 6month panic. Drifting is TOO expensive for the average guy to compete due to HIGH entry fees, silly insurance rules, and regulations. The average drag day will cost a guy about $80, including racing fuel and entry fee. All other fees are the same in racing when you compare transportation, employees, and others. Drifting costs much more in entry fees and tires.
So............don't worry...........in VA our gas prices are already dropping and drag racing will come back to the imports.............it's a fact.....you can quote me
